Residential Supports
Just outside the Village of Thomasburg, people live in three houses located side by side on a 90 acre rural property.  The property features a well-used in-ground swimming pool, and a large barn housing a group of farm animals. There are also three other homes in the Village of Thomasburg supporting a total of eight people and a home in Roslin with two individuals. Four people share a house in the city of Tweed.  Two of our senior individuals share an apartment in Belleville giving them the opportunity to live in the city with amenities close by and a quiet retirement atmosphere.  One person receives support in an independent living situation with periodic supports.

As this region is expanding a recent purchase of a former bed and breakfast property (containing three homes), in Campbellford, is in the process of being converted into more residences for individuals in need of support.  All people contribute to the running of their households as they share the responsibilities of cleaning, meal planning and preparation, grocery shopping, snow-shoveling, grass-cutting and gardening.

Leisure/Recreational Activities
People attend a number of activities and functions such as rally club dances, movies, bowling, concerts, and more. Some people have purchased YMCA passes and are busy with step classes, aquafit classes, swimming, and using the track and gym. Other individuals are school age and are attending the local high school in various programs.  There are also a few who are artists and display and sell their art work.

Vocational Opportunities
Work/training placements include Quinte Vocational Support Services, maintenance and cleaning, running a hobby farm,  running other house related errands and feeding birds at a local conservation area, community jobs such as cleaning toys at a childcare centre volunteering at the Humane Society and helping to run an art program for children.

Community Outreach
We currently provide Community Outreach and Respite support when funding is available.  We have an Autism Consultant in our Belleville Resource Centre who provides in-home consultation and family resource days for people of any age on the autism spectrum living in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties.  Monthly Intro to ASD workshops are held in various regions of Prince Edward and Hastings Counties.  A 4-H Club for children in Kingston is provided with ASD Respite Funding.  Respite and social skills groups are provided on a fee for service basis.  Contact Laura Egerton at legerton@kerrysplace.org for more information.

An Illustration of the Daily Life of Aspies

Kerry's Place Autism Services asked Corina Becker to use her art and writing skills to help others understand Asperger’s Syndrome.  Corina drew upon her own experiences, as well as soliciting feedback from others who have Asperger’s Syndrome, to create Rehabilitating A Cat:  An Illustration of the Daily Life of Aspies.  People on the autism spectrum love reading about a character who experiences the world similar to the way they do; parents and professionals report that they now understand the person they know on the spectrum better after reading this manga.  Corina has drawn upon her love of anime to create a series of short stories:  An Aspie on Stimming; An Aspie on Social Difference; An Aspie on Obsession; and An Aspie on Withdrawing.   You can purchase a copy of Rehabilitating A Cat:  An Illustration of the Daily Life of Aspies and/or the Aspie On…Collection for $7 each plus shipping and handling.
