Community Services
Community Services provides
consultation and support to individuals, families, schools and other
agencies regarding the issues surrounding the Pervasive Developmental
Disorder Spectrum. Consultation and teaching focuses on behavioural
supports,
communication strategies, life and
social skills, long term planning and school advocacy.

The Resource Centre/Library
lends materials such as books, journals, newsletters
and videotapes
on a wide range of topics including:

Autism/Pervasive Developmental Disorder

In addition, we have:

Intensive Child & Family
Services
In-home consultation provides intense, short-term
assistance from a community services staff who can
teach the family strategies to deal with a specific
situation or to teach a new skill. These areas can include:

Support/Behaviour strategies
·
Communication strategies
·
Teaching of life skills
·
Social skills
·
Long-term planning
Social Groups
Kerry’s Place Autism Services Dufferin offers a limited
number of social groups each year depending on need. In addition, a
community services staff is available to consult to other social skills
groups within the community.
Sibshop
Sibshop is a program just for brothers and sister of
kids with special needs. In Sibshops brothers and sisters of kids with
special needs have an opportunity to meet and talk with
other kids who have siblings with unique needs. Sibshops are fun
and provide children with an opportunity to meet other
siblings, play games, do activities, and have dinner with new friends.
Sibshops are co-sponsored by Community Living Dufferin, Dufferin Child and
Family Services and Kerry’s Place Autism Services.
Family Support Group
This group meets the last Tuesday night of every month
from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. I t is an opportunity for family members
to share experiences, strength, hope and ideas.
Groups may include: video/book review, guest speaker on a topic of mutual
interest, and informal sharing in a comfortable and supportive atmosphere.
Group members plan topics around shared
interests.
Workshops
Workshops are offered to groups of people, schools, and
agencies. Workshops can be tailored to specific areas of
interest within the Pervasive Developmental Disorder
Spectrum.
Respite Services
This service can provide families with assistance in
recruiting, screening, training, and matching of potential respite
providers/ contract workers with families in need.
Respite Services are available to all families of children in
Dufferin County with a developmental disability
regardless of their diagnosis.
